Lee Moss, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and Ben Weatherford, President, of MidSouth Bank (In Organization), Murfreesboro, have announced that Dr. George Smith has been named to the Board of Directors of the Bank.

Smith has been a partner in Family Health Associates in Murfreesboro since 1979. He served as the Assistant Commissioner of Tennessee Department of Health from 1987 to 1992. He also currently serves as Medical Director of Community Care of Rutherford County.

Smith received a Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee State University in 1971; a Masters of Science in Public Health; and Medical Degree from Meharry Medical College. His residency was in Family Practice and Preventive Medicine at Meharry.

In addition to his busy medical schedule, Smith finds the time for many civic and community activities. He serves as Chairman of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund; director of Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club; member of Masonic Lodge Arunah Lodge 132; TennCare Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee member; Middle Tennessee Medical Center board member; Middle Tennessee State University Foundation board member; Bradley Academy Historical Association Volunteer; and member of Rutherford County Historical Association.

Smith has received numerous awards for his outstanding achievements through the years. Among those are the Charles C. Jordan Memorial Award, Southern Public Health Association; Presidential Award, Rutherford Education Association; Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society; Boy Scout Long Rifle Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Scouting Program; Murfreesboro Breakfast Rotary Club Rotarian of the Year in 2001; and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Omega Citizen of the Year in 2002.

"George Smith is extremely involved in his community and is a very respected physician," said Chairman and CEO Lee Moss. "He commands the highest respect from his peers and his clients, and I have been honored to know him and work with him for many years," he continued. "I, along with the rest of our management team, am delighted to have him join our Board of Directors."

In early January, 2003, Jack Weatherford, Senior Chairman; Lee Moss, Chairman and CEO; and Ben Weatherford, President, of MIDSOUTH BANK (In Organization) announced their intention of founding the new Bank. It will be headquartered in Murfreesboro and will likely be capitalized with at least $20 million raised by organizers from residents in Middle Tennessee. The initial plans for the new Bank include offices in Murfreesboro and in the Smyrna/LaVergne area, but site locations have yet to be announced. The organization has an office to handle inquiries about the bank at 1138 Dow Street in Murfreesboro and can be reached at 494-4949. Stock subscriptions are currently being accepted at that location.
